I had thought I’d spend my Sunday afternoon browsing the collection at the Tate. However, it’s rather miserable outside, so instead I braved the District Line and went to the Museum of Natural History.
The good: The collection is spectacular, although the T-Rex animatronic was overrated and created a gigantic backlog in the centre of the exhibition. The building is spectacular, so much so it seems a shame to mar it with the supports for the exhibits.
The bad: Everyone else had decided to go as well. This was made worse by the fact that most of these people seemed to have kids sprawled across the floor like marbles, with the matching effect on other browsers. What do people think 3 year old kids are going to get out of it? God knows…
But anyway, it’s still more pleasant than tomorrow is going to be – the RMT is striking as of 1830 tonight for 24 hours. What’s worse is that their striking because they don’t like the new rosters, despite the fact that they’ll get a 35 hour week and (wait for it) 52 days annual leave a year. 52 days (not including strikes). Well, it’s no wonder we pay the highest prices in the world to get from A to B. Lonely Planet actually remarked than taking the Tube between Leicester Square and Convent Garden is more expensive per metre than flying Concorde. And that was 5 years ago, when a single trip was only a pound (it’s now 2-3).
So, plan for career progression: give up work and join London Underground.
