Well, sort of. I’m building myself a media PC. While I’ve got a Fusion PVR the combination of buying an LCD TV with 1280×1024 resolution and stumbling across Pirates! in HMV has broken my will. While I love my PowerBook in unnatural ways (excepting the cack WiFi reception) it’s bugger all use for games. And with the upcoming release of Civ IV, well, that just sealed it.

So, here’s the gist:

  • Antec Aria case. Small, sexy, quiet.
  • Athlon 64 3000+ (Venice core). Great price and 64 bit.
  • MSI RS482M4-ILD motherboard. Well, when someone gets them back in stock.
  • 2 x 512Mb PC3200 RAM. Possibly Geil or OCZ.
  • Gainward GF6600GT 1960PCX. Just can’t beat this card at the current prices.
  • DVD writer. They’re just too cheap to resist.
  • WiFi card of some sort. As long as it works, I care not.

I’ve got my wireless Logitech Comfort en-route from NZ and a Seagate Barracuda 160Gb I’m going to strip from the USB enclosure it’s currently living in (as it’s kind of unused now I’ve got 80Gb in my laptop). End result: Pirates! Yarr! And down the line maybe a TV card and I can replace the PVR and drop to one device (although I’d still need a Freeview box which limits it a bit).

Hopefully it’ll be ready for the weekend. The catch is waiting for the motherboard to come into stock. The upside – the RS482 dumps the SB400 south bridge for the less buggy SB450, so it’s probably well worth the wait.
