Over a month since my last post. Huzzah!
Finally my iBook is complete and I love it. I used to frown upon Macs and the cultish people who used them. Mac OS Classic (9 and below) were the ultimate consumer devices – great for people wanting to check email and useless to do any real work with. Mac OS X is fantastic though. It runs very nicely on my relatively puny 1Ghz iBook and despite having the world’s most lovely and well thought out interface (not perfect mind, just better than the alternatives) sits upon a BSD layer which gives you all the hackability you want. I hate to say it but ever since I discovered I could use ps and kill -9 I’ve been hooked.
Also had a play with the new iPAQ rz1710 from HP. Small and relatively elegant (although a little hard edged) it’s really rather underpowered. It’s funny how I have a nicer and more performant interface on my relatively puny Palm (well, Polly’s relatively puny Palm, as mine is a T3). Windows Mobile reminds me a lot of NT 3.51 – quite powerful underneath with with a Windows 3 interface. It could do with a spruce up.
In other highlights, the Dog & Bone has some of the worst service in Wellington. Meals took forever and they still forgot someone. Whoops. And the bar tab broke $1000 (for 20 people, half of whom weren’t drinking). Damn IT people.
